What Is Labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure to reduce or increase the size the labia minora or labia majora—the skin folds surrounding and protecting the urethra and vagina. When the labia become enlarged, the excess skin can become twisted or get pinched, causing discomfort during intercourse, exercise, or other physical activities.

During a labiaplasty, Dr. Daugherty removes excess tissue from the labia minora to reduce their size. In other cases, she will inject dermal fillers or harvested fat cells into the labia majora to enlarge them. While there are significant variations in the appearance of natural genitalia, a highly individualized approach is necessary to ensure optimal results for each patient. Dr. Daugherty uses her training and talents to improve women’s quality of life with labiaplasty.

There are many reasons your labia can change in size and shape, including:

  • Age
  • Menopause
  • Hormonal changes
  • Pregnancy and childbirth
  • Weight fluctuations
  • Genetics

You can also choose to add labiaplasty to your customized mommy makeover, paired with procedures such as:

What Are the Benefits of Labiaplasty?

While it can be embarrassing to discuss any issues you’re experiencing “down there,” we want you to feel more sexually confident and enjoy intimate experiences by looking your best everywhere. Labiaplasty can improve the appearance and increase the comfort of your most feminine areas.

Labiaplasty can address elongated labia that are prone to chafing or rubbing, especially during sex or other physical activities like riding a bike or even sitting. You might be seeking labiaplasty surgery to correct damage caused by traumas such as childbirth or episiotomy.

The goals of labiaplasty are to:

  • Alleviate discomfort during sex, exercise, and other physical activities
  • Improve personal hygiene and health
  • Restore a more youthful look after childbirth or aging
  • Correct asymmetries
  • Eliminate any visual bulges
  • Improve comfort, confidence, and sexual well-being
  • Repair damage or deformities
  • Increase sexual pleasure and self-confidence
  • Enhance the appearance of your labia

Am I an Ideal Candidate for Labiaplasty?

Typically, labiaplasty candidates in Louisiana are women who are self-conscious about the size or shape of their labia or experience discomfort during various routine activities. Labiaplasty candidates in Baton Rouge should:

  • Live a healthy lifestyle
  • Be at least 18 years old

What Can I Expect During a Baton Rouge Labiaplasty Surgery?

Dr. Daugherty customizes each labiaplasty procedure to address her patients’ unique concerns. Here are some general steps you can expect.

Check-In and Anesthesia
Plan to arrive about an hour before your procedure. After our team has welcomed you and checked you in, Dr. Daugherty will ensure you are comfortable, answer any last questions, then perform surgical markings. Once you are resting comfortably under anesthesia, Dr. Daugherty will begin your labiaplasty procedure.
Labiaplasty Reduction Procedure
The trim procedure allows Dr. Daugherty to remove excess tissue from the outside edge of one or both sides of the labia minora to make them even with the labia majora. The wedge procedure allows Dr. Daugherty to remove a wedge-shaped section of tissue from the inner areas of the labia minora. The wrinkled edges of the labia remain intact after being sutured, maintaining a natural look.
Labiaplasty Enlarging Procedure
Typically, to enlarge the labia majora, Dr. Daugherty harvests a small amount of fat from your abdomen or thigh via liposuction, processes the fat, then injects it into the labia majora. Dermal fillers are an alternative option.
Labiaplasty Aftercare
Following labiaplasty, you will experience swelling, discomfort, and pain. You can manage these with prescription or over-the-counter medications. You may find relief by using cold compresses or ice packs as well. Most patients report mild and manageable discomfort and pain for about a week. You’ll probably feel healed enough to return to work and other activities after a few days. For four to six weeks, please avoid sexual intimacy and do not do strenuous exercises such as running, cycling, or swimming. We also ask that you wear loose-fitting pants and undergarments.

FAQ

Baton Rouge, LA, Labiaplasty

The cost of your labiaplasty will depend on your individual needs and goals. Following your consultation, Dr. Daugherty’s team will give you a breakdown of the costs.

Typically, the first few days following labiaplasty are when patients experience the most discomfort. Swelling, soreness, and temporary discoloration tend to decrease a couple of weeks after surgery. Most residual swelling completely resolves after six weeks; however, it may take four to six months of healing time to see the full results of your labiaplasty.

Since labiaplasty provides long-lasting improvement, most women never need to undergo a reduction surgery again unless rare complications arise. However, if your goal is to enlarge your labia, you may need maintenance injections of fat or fillers over time.

Following a labiaplasty, we suggest sleeping on your back with a pillow between your legs for comfort.

Swelling will be at its most severe for the first few days, so avoid prolonged sitting for about a week. You’ll be most comfortable lying down, so you should stay in a prone position as often as possible. After one week, most women feel well enough to walk.

For the first two to three days, we suggest most patients rest and minimize activities. As you heal, you can gradually resume a more active lifestyle. Please wait to start a more strenuous workout routine until after Dr. Daugherty clears you to.

While labiaplasty does not affect your ability to get pregnant or carry a healthy baby to term, most women wait to have this procedure until after they’re no longer adding to their family. However, if you have physical deformities to your labia, you may qualify at any time.

Dr. Daugherty will meet with you, take a history of your problem and concerns and a medical history.  She will then do a chaperoned exam of your areas of concern and make recommendations for treatment. If you decide to proceed with surgery, we can book a date that works for you.

Know what concerns you and why. If you have questions for Dr. Daugherty, try to write them down so that you don’t get too nervous on the day of and forget to ask something.

Do not shave the bikini area for a couple of days prior to surgery. Avoid alcohol, aspirin, NSAIDS and supplements than can thin your blood and cause easier bleeding and bruising.

Patients with excess mucosal tissue that may hang or rub in clothing or patients who feel like their labia is deflated or sagging are great candidates.

Swelling and bruising last around 7-10 days. There are absorbable sutures in place for about 7 days.  Patients are placed on pelvic rest for 6 weeks post-surgery – like a vaginal delivery.

Most people take a week off work.

Scars are at the edge of the labia minora or mucosal part of the vagina and are well hidden.

Labiaplasty is surgical rejuvenation of the vagina. There are also nonsurgical options, but these typically won’t address excess tissue.

Labiaplasty can be performed under local anesthesia, oral sedation, IV sedation and general anesthesia.

The patient notices a difference and therefore may have more sexual confidence. The partner will notice a difference on the external appearance, but sensation may or may not change after surgery.

During the healing period, there may be a change in sensation – either decreased or increased – but this typically lasts a couple of months and then normalizes.

Unless this skin is overhanging, Dr. Daugherty will not address this area.

It is recommended that you take it easy for a three to four weeks post-surgery to allow your body to heal.

Dr. Daugherty does surgery on separate days from clinic and consultation. On the consultation day, you will first meet with her to discuss your goals and do an examination. Then you will schedule surgery on a day that is convenient to your schedule.

Call our office to book a consultation 225-235-3884. We would love to help you get started.

As a female plastic surgeon and mother of four children, Dr. Daugherty understands this delicate area of anatomy and the changes that can happen after the pelvic pressure of pregnancy and vaginal delivery.  She hopes to make the process as easy and comfortable as possible.
