What Is a Breast Reduction?

Breast reduction, or reduction mammaplasty, is a surgical procedure that aims to remove fat, glandular tissue, and excess skin to create smaller, more proportionately sized breasts. Often, this procedure reduces physical and emotional discomfort typically associated with the weight of excessively large breasts.

Breast reduction can deliver natural-looking results that offer benefits like:

  • Reduced neck, shoulder, and back pain
  • Increased energy and stamina
  • Less irritation and chafing under bra straps
  • Increased self-confidence and renewed self-image
  • Smaller, more youthful-looking breasts
  • Improved appearance in clothing

What Are the Benefits of a Breast Reduction?

Enlarged, heavy breasts can make it harder for you to find a comfortable sleeping position, buy flattering clothes that fit you well, and do challenging workouts. However, the negative emotions and self-image associated with overly large breasts can be as significant as the physical issues. A breast reduction might provide the solution you’re looking for if you have experienced:

  • Feelings that your breasts are too large
  • Limited physical activities due to large breasts
  • Back, neck, and shoulder pain caused by breast weight
  • Shoulder indentations from bra straps
  • Skin irritation beneath breasts

Breast reduction can help you achieve the proportions you’ve always wanted. When your physical and mental discomfort are no longer holding you back, you may discover new options that will further improve your appearance, well-being, and overall quality of life. View our gallery for breast reduction before-and-after photos.

Am I an Ideal Candidate for a Breast Reduction?

Overall, candidates for breast reduction include patients who would like smaller breasts because they are experiencing pain and emotional turmoil.

Dr. Daugherty recommends breast reduction candidates should:

  • Live a healthy lifestyle and have realistic expectations
  • Many younger patients with large breasts opt to do this surgery before starting a family. Dr. Daugherty frequently conducts extensive counseling beforehand with each patient. Decisions for surgery are made when the benefits to the patient outweigh the risks.
  • Be non-smokers or be willing to quit before surgery
  • Understand the risks of surgery

Patients who are not candidates for a breast reduction are:

  • Actively losing weight
  • Currently pregnant or breastfeeding.  Breastfeeding should be ceased for 6 months prior to surgery
  • People who want to become pregnant again

Dr. Daugherty appreciates how valuable your time is. She’ll also review the details, risks, and benefits of breast reduction procedures and conduct a thorough examination, including:

  • Current vs. desired breast size and shape
  • Quality of breast tissue and skin
  • Current mammogram results
  • Family history of breast cancer
  • Evaluate your full medical history and overall health

What Can I Expect During a Baton Rouge Breast Reduction Procedure?

Dr. Daugherty will tailor your breast reduction plan to address your specific needs. However, here are some general steps you can expect.

Check-In and Anesthesia
Plan on arriving about an hour before your procedure. After our team has welcomed you and checked you in, Dr. Daugherty will ensure you are comfortable, answer any last questions, then perform surgical markings. Once you are under sedation, Dr. Daugherty will begin your breast reduction.
Breast Reduction Procedure
Depending on your anatomy, Dr. Daugherty will determine the appropriate incision. Then, she will reposition your nipples without removing them, also reducing the areolas, if necessary. Rarely for larger, pendulous breasts, she may remove the nipples and areolas and transplant them to a more anatomical position. Once she has removed, lifted, and reshaped your breasts, Dr. Daugherty will place sutures deep within the breast tissue to provide support for your smaller breasts.
Breast Reduction Aftercare
Since breast reduction is an outpatient surgery, we’ll send you home as soon as you wake up and are stable enough to do so. You will need someone to drive you home and stay with you for the first few days to assist you with daily tasks, especially if you have small children. For at least three weeks after surgery, you’ll need to wear a support garment or sports bra to minimize swelling and allow your body to adjust to its new contours. For those with physically demanding jobs or small children, plan on four to six weeks of recovery time. Patients with sedentary jobs might feel healed enough to return to work in one to two weeks. All patients should avoid strenuous activities and exercises for at least six weeks.
