What Is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure to increase or restore breast size that can also enhance your breasts’ shape and projection. With various saline or silicone implants that range in size and consistency, Dr. Daugherty will help you determine your best breast implant options depending on your anatomy and aesthetic preferences.

We also offer breast augmentation with fat transfer, also known as fat grafting or autologous fat transfer. In this cosmetic procedure, fat is harvested from one part of the patient’s body through liposuction and then injected into the breasts. This technique is chosen by those who prefer a more natural approach compared to implants. The procedure has dual benefits: it contours areas where excess fat is removed while enhancing breast size and shape. The results are typically more subtle than implants, offering a natural look and feel.

For silicone breast implants, Dr. Daugherty uses the Keller Funnel method of implantation. It is a no-touch sterile approach that has many benefits, including:

  • Smaller breast augmentation incisions
  • Decreased risk of infection and capsular contracture
  • Faster recovery
  • Less stress on the implant
  • Quicker procedure time

Breast augmentation can also be part of a mommy makeover procedure. A mommy makeover is a group of post-childbirth and breastfeeding body rejuvenation procedures that may also include:

What Can I Expect During a Breast Augmentation Procedure?

Dr. Daugherty customizes each patient’s breast enhancement procedure for optimal results. However, here are some general steps you can expect.

Check-In and Anesthesia
Plan on arriving about an hour before your procedure. After our team has welcomed you and checked you in, Dr. Daugherty will ensure you are comfortable, answer any last questions, and perform surgical markings. Once you are under anesthesia, Dr. Daugherty will begin your breast augmentation in Baton Rouge.
Breast Augmentation
According to your agreed-upon surgical plan, Dr. Daugherty will begin by creating small incisions in the creases underneath the breasts to place your breast implant. Dr. Daugherty uses the Keller Funnel method for inserting silicone implants, which allows for smaller incisions and a quicker procedure. For fat transfer procedures, she will extract fat from another area via liposuction and then carefully transfer it to the breasts.
Breast Augmentation Aftercare
Breast augmentations are an outpatient procedure, so you’ll need someone to drive you home and stay with you for the first few days to assist you. You may have prescriptions for pain medication and antibiotics. For approximately four to six weeks following your breast augmentation, you will need to wear a post-surgical support bra or sports bra full-time to provide support to your breasts and minimize swelling. Plan on taking approximately 5 days off from work. You will also need to avoid strenuous activities, including exercise and heavy lifting, for at least four to six weeks after surgery.

FAQ

Baton Rouge, LA, Breast Augmentation

Your surgeon should be board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery – not a Cosmetic surgery board.  The ABPS only certifies rigorously trained plastic and reconstructive surgeons at a limited number of approved programs across the country.  There is an arduous process that each candidate must complete after training in such a program to obtain board certification by the ABPS.  This  is a right of passage that is necessary to deliver the best standards to our patients.  It is also important to look at the before and after portfolio of your surgeon as well as patient experiences.

Most patients notice immediate improvements after breast augmentation. However, you may also experience bruising and swelling that temporarily obscures your results. In addition, the implants will ride high for several weeks to months until the muscle covering the implant fully relaxes and allows the implants to fall into place.   As your body heals, these side effects will resolve, and your new contours will become more visible. Swelling may take up to six months to fully go down.

Breast augmentation cost in Baton Rouge, LA, depends on your specific needs and surgical plan. At your consultation, Dr. Daugherty will give you a breakdown of the cost of a breast augmentation in Louisiana.

Silicone breast implants will look and feel more natural.

Breast augmentation recovery time is approximately four to six weeks. During this time, we suggest refraining from lifting heavy objects and strenuous physical activities.

At your consultation, Dr. Daugherty will gladly show you photos of previous patients she has partnered with.

The intense recovery lasts about 3 to 4 days.  You may return to work at a desk job after a long weekend of recovery.  You may still be sore and feel tightness in your chest after this time.  Sutures will come out after 7 days.  There is no sweating or submerging in water of any kind until at least 3 weeks after surgery.  The implants are placed under the pectoralis muscle which will spasm and pull the device high initially.  This may last for weeks to months until the muscle stretches and relaxes allowing the implants to drop into place.  Because of this, it is best to plan ahead so that the implants are properly positioned by the time you need to wear a bathing suit or low cut dress.

Yes – you need someone to drive you and to stay with you for at least 24 hours after surgery.

If you have a desk job, you can return to work after a long weekend of recovery.  Manual laborers will need a longer break to avoid sweating, heavy lifting etc and may need to return to light duty until fully healed at about 4-6 weeks.

You should avoid exercising and other activities that increase your blood pressure for at least four to six weeks following your breast augmentation. However, you should begin walking as soon as possible.

For a few weeks following a breast augmentation, patients should sleep on their backs with their upper bodies slightly elevated to avoid putting pressure on the breasts and minimize swelling. Patients should try to avoid stomach sleeping for at least six weeks after their procedure.

Yes!  You need to wear a good support bra without an underwire for 6 weeks around the clock after breast augmentation surgery.  This is to prevent stretching the pocket before the capsule is well formed.  This will help to prevent breast implant malposition over time.  After 6 weeks, you should still wear a good support bra to exercise and wear a bra in general more often than not.

Yes – and you should!!  The mammographers will be able to screen all of your breast tissue which is on top of the pectoralis muscle covering the implant.

More commonly, the nipple areolar complex is hypersensitive or has increased sensitivity for a while after breast augmentation.  This is due to stretch of the tissues overlying the implant which carry some of the sensory nerves to the nipple.  This will normalize over time but usually takes several weeks to return to normal sensation.

I will listen to your goals and do everything that I can to help you achieve those.  I will be upfront with you every step of the way.  I have nursed all four of my children so am incredibly empathetic to mothers who wish to replace lost volume after pregnancy and  breastfeeding.

Augmentation of the breasts with implants will add volume to your existing anatomy.  It will not change the placement of breasts on the chest wall, placement or size of the nipples or areolas or width of cleavage.  Everyone’s preoperative anatomy is different, so results vary patient to patient.  Dr. Daugherty will do a thorough examination and will discuss in detail what you may expect as a result of breast augmentation with an implant.

Dr. Daugherty will do a series of measurements and a thorough physical exam which will determine whether or not a breast lift will be necessary for optimal shape of the breasts.

The Keller Funnel enables your surgeon to easily place the implant into the breast pocket without touching it and without it touching the breast skin.

During the consultation, Dr. Daugherty will measure your chest to help determine the best range of implant sizes for your body.  A discussion of your goals and wish photos also help to narrow down the options.  Then, you will be allowed to try on some implants to see which you prefer best.

The no touch technique is placement of the implant into the pocket without anyone touching the device.  This is done to ensure absolute sterility and to prevent future capsular contracture. The implant goes directly into the keller funnel and then the funnel is used to place the implant directly into the dissected breast pocket.

Usually not for a primary or first time breast augmentation.  The only caveat would be someone with very thin tissues potentially after massive weight loss.  In revision breast surgery, especially in patients with breast implant malposition over time, the internal bra will definitely be discussed to help hold the implant in place.

You should not have drains after a simple breast augmentation.

There are multiple deep layers done with absorbable sutures that don’t require removal.  There is typically one outer layer of sutures that needs to be removed at 7 days after surgery.

The scar is underneath the breast in the inframammary fold.

Plan for your consultation with wish photos, and discuss your goals during your consultation.

No – you should move and stretch your arms.  You should avoid heavy lifting for about 6 weeks after surgery.

The implant can rupture.  The incidence of this is 7% at 10 years post surgery and increases after that.

Unhappiness with cosmetic appearance, need for additional surgery, unhappiness with size, Infection, hematoma, implant malposition, implant rupture, capsular contracture.

More than likely you will need surgery at some point in the future to replace or remove your Implants.  Breast implants are safe, but they are medical devices. It’s difficult to say how long each patient will go prior to needing additional surgery. Screening for rupture can be done with ultrasound or MRI for silicone implants starting around 5 years post surgery and every couple of years after that.  If you have a saline device, you will know that it’s ruptured because your breast will deflate.   It’s just like getting maintenance on a car, you can expect it.
