Before and After Photos

What Is a Facelift?

A facelift, or rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure that aims to improve visible signs of aging in the mid- and lower face and neck. Rather than changing your fundamental appearance, a facelift restores the areas that are most vulnerable to aging, from your cheeks to your jawline. Though nothing can halt the natural aging process in its tracks, facelifts are the best way to turn back the clock and remove at least a decade from your appearance.

When performing a facelift, Dr. Daugherty can remove excess skin, tighten underlying tissues, and carefully recontour your face and neck, including:

  • Sagging skin in the midface or jawline
  • Creased and sagging skin in the neck
  • Nasolabial folds
  • Marionette lines
  • Lost volume
  • Jowls
  • A double chin
  •

Since most facelift patients also have concerns about their neck’s appearance, Dr. Daugherty performs neck lift surgery in conjunction with a facelift to smooth, lift, and tighten neck tissues to craft a sleeker, more youthful profile.

In addition to traditional facelifts, Dr. Daugherty also offers a deep-plane facelift and neck lift. Deep-plane facelifts are a specialized type of surgery that aims to tighten SMAS layer and platysma muscle by elevating them and releasing them from all attachments. Dr. Daugherty will also address areas deep to the platysma muscle to achieve a slimmer, sculpted jawline, providing results that traditional facelifts cannot. A deep-plane facelift delivers dramatic transformations to restore a youthful appearance, even to patients who experience advanced signs of aging.

What Are the Benefits of a Facelift?

What Can I Expect During a Facelift Procedure?

Because there isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach to facelifts, Dr. Daugherty customizes all facelift procedures for optimal results. However, here are some general steps you can expect.

Check-In and Anesthesia
Plan on arriving about an hour before your procedure so our team has plenty of time to greet you and check you in. Then, Dr. Daugherty will ensure you are comfortable, answer any last questions, and make surgical markings. Once your sedation is in full effect, Dr. Daugherty will begin your facelift in Baton Rouge.
Facelift Procedure
According to your procedural plan, Dr. Daugherty will begin your facelift by creating small, well-concealed incisions along the edges of your ears and within your natural hairline. Then, she will tighten facial muscles and remove redundant skin and fat. Typically, deep-plane facelifts will take four to five hours, depending on your procedural plan.
Facelift Aftercare
After completing your facelift, Dr. Daugherty will gently cover your face with a compression dressing which will be removed at your post-operative appointment the next day. You will be changed to a surgical compression wrap on post operative day one, Thank which you’ll need to wear for approximately four to six weeks. Swelling and bruising are common following facelifts; however, they gradually improve. You can help reduce swelling and bruising by elevating your head while sleeping and using cold compresses. Plan on taking approximately two weeks off from work. You will also need to avoid strenuous activities, including exercise and heavy lifting, for at least four to six weeks following surgery.

Deep Plane Facelift vs. Traditional Facelift: What’s the Difference?

Traditional facelifts focus on tightening the skin and the superficial muscular layer (SMAS) to refine the jawline and neck. A deep plane facelift goes a step further by carefully releasing and repositioning the deeper facial tissues, including the SMAS, muscle, and attached ligaments, as a single unit. This allows the midface, jawline, and neck to be lifted together in a more natural vector, rather than simply pulling the skin tighter.

Because deeper structures are addressed, a deep plane facelift can be especially effective for patients with more advanced jowling, heavy nasolabial folds, or fullness under the chin. The goal is a stronger yet softer rejuvenation, restoring youthful contours while maintaining normal facial movement. Dr. Daugherty offers both traditional and deep plane techniques and will recommend the approach that best matches your anatomy, aging pattern, and recovery goals.

What Happens During a Deep Plane Facelift?

During a deep plane facelift, Dr. Daugherty begins with small, well-concealed incisions around the ears and in the hairline, similar to a traditional facelift. Instead of stopping at the superficial layer, she gently elevates the deeper facial tissues, including the SMAS and platysma muscle, and releases the retaining ligaments that tether the cheeks and neck. This allows the midface and lower face to be repositioned as a unit rather than pulling the skin separately.

Once these deeper structures are lifted into a more youthful position, the overlying skin is redraped without excess tension, and any redundant skin is carefully removed. The result is improved cheek fullness, a crisper jawline, and a smoother neck contour, with less risk of an overly “pulled” look. As with all her procedures, Dr. Daugherty tailors each step to your unique features to ensure a balanced, natural outcome.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Deep Plane Facelift?

Good candidates for a deep plane facelift are patients who want comprehensive, long-lasting facial rejuvenation and are ready for a more advanced technique. This approach can be ideal if you have:

  • Significant jowling or sagging along the jawline
  • Deep nasolabial folds or hollowing around the mouth
  • Heavier neck fullness or banding that hasn’t responded to non-surgical options
  • Good overall health and realistic expectations about surgery and recovery

Many candidates are in their 50s, 60s, or beyond, but age alone is not the deciding factor—your facial anatomy and skin quality matter most. During your consultation, Dr. Daugherty will examine your bone structure, soft tissues, and skin, then explain whether a deep plane facelift, traditional facelift, or combination approach is the safest and most effective option for you.

What Other Procedures Can Be Combined with Deep Plane Facelift?

A deep plane facelift focuses on the midface, jawline, and neck, but aging affects the entire face. For the most harmonious result, Dr. Daugherty may recommend combining a deep plane lift with:

  • Neck lift (deep plane structural neck lift): Tightens the platysma muscle and addresses deeper structures under the chin to refine the neck and create a sharper angle between the face and neck.
  • Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty): Removes excess skin and fat from the upper or lower lids to reduce heaviness, puffiness, and under-eye bags, helping the eyes look more awake and refreshed.
  • Brow lift: Elevates a low or heavy brow and softens deep forehead lines so the upper face matches the rejuvenated midface and neck.
  • Fat grafting: Uses your own purified fat to restore soft volume in the cheeks, temples, or under-eye area, enhancing the lifting effect and improving overall facial balance.

These procedures can often be performed during the same operation as a deep plane facelift, allowing for a single recovery period and a more complete transformation.

What Does Deep Plane Facelift Recovery Look Like?

Recovery after a deep plane facelift is similar in overall timeline to other comprehensive facelifts, but swelling can be a bit more pronounced in the first days because deeper tissues have been repositioned. You’ll go home the same day or after a brief observation period, with a supportive dressing in place and detailed post-operative instructions.

Most patients experience noticeable swelling and bruising during the first 1 to 2 weeks, with steady improvement thereafter. It’s common to plan about two weeks away from public-facing work or social events and to avoid strenuous activity and heavy lifting for at least 4 to 6 weeks. Mild tightness, numbness, or firmness can linger as tissues settle, gradually softening over several months. As healing progresses, you’ll see the deep plane work reveal a more defined jawline, uplifted midface, and smoother neck that continue to refine for 6 to 12 months.

FAQ

Baton Rouge, LA, Facelift

Facelift cost in Louisiana depends on your individual needs. After your consultation, Dr. Daugherty will give you a breakdown of the cost of a facelift in Louisiana.

Dr. Daugherty and her friendly team will happily provide pictures of real-life facelift patients so you can get a sense of what you might expect.

The mini-facelift or short scar lift incision ends behind the ear and is appropriately used in someone who doesn’t have much neck skin to take out.  In patients with heavier or looser necks, the incision extends from behind the ear to along the posterior hairline in a traditional facelift.  Done well, both procedures can lend themselves to ponytails or shorter hairstyles.

Have questions prepared for your doctor.  Be ready to communicate what it is that bothers you about your face and what you wish you could improve.

Read over all post operative instructions given by your physician.  Have ice packs prepared for the first 48-72 hours.  Have a place to sleep where you can have your head and neck elevated.  Fill all your prescriptions prior to the day of surgery and make sure you and your caretaker are familiar with the medications.

This is individualized, but most patients are in their 50s to early 60s at the time of first facelift.  In massive weight loss patients, facial tissues may sag sooner causing need for tightening at a younger age.  Patients who lack good bone structure in the jaw also may begin jowling or have loose neck skin sooner than their peers.

There is a nonsurgical “liquid facelift” which involves the use of HA filler to lift and fill the tissues and to help camouflage areas that are telltale aging signs.  Some practices may offer something call thread lifting as well – Dr. Daugherty feels like the risks outweigh the benefits so does not offer this procedure.

A liquid facelift uses filler to lift and fill the tissues.  In a liquid facelift, there is no lifting or tightening of tissues and skin like happens during traditional surgery.  A liquid facelift also only lasts as long as the product lasts 1-2 years prior to needing additional treatment or filler placed.

Following your facelift, you may not feel like facing the world for one to two weeks. After three to four weeks, you may still experience residual swelling and tightness, but you’ll begin to see facial contour improvements. It may take six to 12 months for swelling to fully resolve, but most patients can resume normal activities a month post-procedure.

Taking care of your skin with medical grade skin care and sun protection are essential to prolonging your results.  Injectables like botox and filler can also help to elevate what is achieved surgically.

The goal is youthful restoration of the jawline and neck, sharpening or recreating the cervicomental angle or angle between the neck and lower face.

The benefits should last about 10 years.  You should expect to age more gracefully than the rest of your peers because of this investment in yourself.

You should avoid sweating or submerging your head or face in water for about 3 weeks.  It is ok to wash your face and hair beginning 2 days out from surgery, but only with fresh water out of the faucet – no tub baths or pools.

If you have a desk job, you will feel good enough to work from home in about 3-4 days.  Optimal time away from the office if you want to keep your procedure totally secret is 10-14 days.

For optimal healing and to decrease the risks of post surgical wounds, smokers need to abstain from all tobacco and nicotine products for at least 3 weeks prior to surgery and 3 weeks after.  You do not want to have a preventable complication after elective surgery on your face.

This can be individualized depending on add on facial procedures or the patient’s own anatomy, but roughly 4 hours is a good estimate.

After about one week most of the bruising and swelling is resolving.  You will not be event ready until around 4 weeks.

The SMAS may be tightened without lifting in a SMAS plication or lifted up and tightened in other SMAS facelifts.  The SMAS is a layer of fascia which is contiguous with the platysma muscle in the neck.

A deep plane lift elevates the muscular sling in the neck known as the platysma and tightens this up and back.  This technique also addresses the structures deep to the platysma that may cause fullness in the neck.

Risks of facelift surgery include bleeding, infection, scar which goes around the ear and potentially into the posterior hairline. The skin that is raised is numb for a while post operatively but typically regain sensation in 3-6 months time.  There are motor nerves or nerves that control the muscles in your face that may be stunned or damaged from surgery as well.  While this is a rare complication, it is a known risk of surgery and necessary to discuss. Most commonly if this were to occur, the weakness is temporary.
